Monday Mentionables: American Beauty

This week, take the time to see the beauty in the unconventional.

Do you remember that scene from 'American Beauty'? It's the one where teenagers Jane and Ricky are watching the plastic bag dance in the wind. Do you remember what Ricky says?

"It was one of those days, when it's a minute away from snowing, and there's this electricity in the air. You can almost hear it, right? And this bag was just dancing with me, like a little kid begging me to play with it, for fifteen minutes.

That's the day I realized there was this entire life behind things, and this incredibly benevolent force, that wanted me to know there was no reason to be afraid, ever. Video's a poor excuse, I know, but it helps me remember. I need to remember.

Sometimes there is so much... beauty... in the world, I feel like I can't take it, and my heart is just going to cave in."

The scene, of course, is set to foil the conventional and very mishapen understanding of what beauty must be as depicted through the eyes of Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey).

It's ironic, then, that this would serve to be a Monday Mentionables on a fashion/beauty/lifestyle blog. Regardless, I think that, between the nail-polish how-tos, and the style posts, and the DIYs, and the make-up tutorials, we need to be reminded that there is so much more to life than the perfect hair, and the most fashionable outfit. Perhaps that is why I have chosen to broaden this blog beyond just the beauty posts. Perhaps that is why I have decided to take on this project with an old laptop, out-of-date photoshop, and an iPhone 4S camera.

Perhaps that is why I feel as though the incorporation of a venue such as Monday Mentionables gives me an outlet to share the more pensive side of myself with you, my dear readers.

We need to be reminded to go and feel the electricity in the air; to spot the simplicity in our daily meanderings. I fear we take ourselves too seriously, sometimes.

Everything has beauty.

Dance with it.
