Friday Style: Oh So Zooey

Closets are great, aren't they? You can close the door on them, and no one would have the slightest idea that, behind those doors, exists piles of clothes, shoes, and other random things one simply has no interest in putting away. It's kind of spectacular, really. With one quick pull, I can hide everything I tried on before settling on this outfit for today.

After my last post, I wasn't sure what to put up on the blog. I spent a lot of energy discussing beauty, selfies, and how we need to do a better job at educating young women that they are beautiful just as they are. The selfie articles are still flowing freely about the internet, and journalists now seem to calling for the trend to just stop. I have to say, I agree.

This whole #makeupfreeselfie thing got me thinking about my personal style and beauty routine. Who do I look to for guidelines of what it means to be beautiful in today's culture?

Realistically, I don't spend a lot of time following the runway or fashion trends. Being a Christian, I know that my values of beauty are founded in something completely beyond what the beauty/fashion industry teach. Also, so much of my wardrobe is thrifted that, for me, I am more concerned with dressing my body in a way that flatters it, while also maintaining a level of modesty. You will never see a style post of my scantily clad body. As far as I am concerned, the only person who should be able to see any parts of me that should be covered is my husband - whenever it is that I do get married.

So, I guess what I am trying to say, is that as far as dressing myself goes, my closet is full of scarves, dresses, leggings (because I do not feel comfortable in short dresses - even in summer), and sweat pants for those days when I have no desire to look cute or wear a normal bra. I guess you could say that my style icon, or closest to it, would be Zooey Deshanel. And quite frankly, if I was to take a good look at the way women in Hollywood are dressed, I have to give props to Zooey for keeping it quirky and modest.

Also, I suppose that, as my outfits go, this is the most Zooey-esque thing I have ever posted.

dress // thrifted
cardigan // Smart Set
belt // unknown origins
leggings // Suzy Shier
shoes // thrifted
